    Website Localization Basics

Language companies offer quality assurance processes by having their work reviewed by several individuals, usually a combination of native speakers and in-country reviewers of the languages involved.     Localization has multiple meanings, depending on the context.

    1. Localization can be when you change a product container, publication, website, brochure, or other document into another language, while also ensuring that the product presentation is culturally appropriate for your target audience. Culture is extremely critical. If you're my age or older, you may remember when General Motors tried to sell one of its cars, the Nova, in Mexico. The company failed to realize that Nova, or "no va", in Spanish means "no go" in English.

    2. Localization can refer to the translation of software or websites. These websites contain workflows and allow users to easily navigate through a page. If you have ever built a website or worked as a programmer on a software team, then you know there is "code" behind the scenes that drives every click and image you see. Proper localization will separate the "code" from the words being displayed and efficiently translate the words while maintaining the framework of the software or website. Subtle changes matter. For example, white is a pleasing color to use in some cultures but it conveys grief in other cultures. A website translated into Arabic must read right to left.

    The best language companies pay great attention to the choice of symbols, colors, currency and time formats, not to mention proper testing of your software or website to ensure that they are appropriate in the country or region where the document or website will appear.
